Medical Malpractice insurance is a contractual obligation for dental professionals. It is a condition of registration with the GDC that dental practitioners have indemnity insurance in place. This applies whether you are a dental nurse, a dental technician, a dental hygienist or an orthodontic therapist.

What does Medical Malpractice Insurance Cover?

If a patient makes a claim against you due to an injury caused by your dental work, your Medical Malpractice insurance will protect you. Your policy will cover you for:

  • Professional Indemnity - for any financial loss caused to third parties by your negligent act, error or omission during the provision of dental professional services.
  • Public/General and Product Liability - for any bodily injury and/or property damage caused by an accident in connection with your dental practice.
  • Loss of documents - (destruction, damage or loss) owned by or entrusted to you.
  • Breach of professional confidentiality - during the course of your dental work.
  • Libel and slander - committed without malice in the conduct of your work as a dental professional.
  • Inquest costs - in respect of unexpected deaths which may give rise to a claim.
  • Good Samaritan acts - where you render assistance to a member of the public not under your direct care.

Why Should I Have My Own Cover?

If you are employed by a single dental or orthodontic practice and are confident that their insurance covers the dental work you do, it's likely that you do not need your own Medical Malpractice insurance.

However, many dental hygienists and technicians work for more than one dental practice on a freelance basis. If you contract your dental professional services to several dental surgeries it is important to have your own indemnity protection in place. It is your responsibility to protect the dental work you carry out.

Even if you only work for one practice and are employed by them, you may prefer to take out your own Medical Malpractice insurance to give you the peace of mind that you are fully protected if something goes wrong.

How Much Does Medical Malpractice Insurance Cost?

The cost of cover for you will depend on the type of work you do and how long you need cover for. To get an accurate cost, why not get a quote from us now? It will only take you a minute and you are under no obligation to buy.

How Much Cover Do I Need?

We offer up to £5 million of Medical Malpractice cover, but you can buy whatever amount up to that limit you need. When deciding how much cover to buy, think about the type of dental work you do, the potential mistakes that could happen and the likely amount of claim that could be made as a result.
