Tapoly sells public liability insurance for many types of freelancers and small businesses. We can add on Employer's Liability too, if you need it. It's insurance tailored to your needs, not ours.

What is Public Liability insurance?

Public Liability insurance protects you if a customer or member of the public injures themselves or damages one of their possessions while they are on your property. It also covers you if you damage something belonging to them while you are visiting their premises. If they sue you as a result, it covers your legal costs and any financial compensation awarded.

What does Public Liability insurance cover?

Public Liability insurance gives you cover against compensation or legal costs if someone claims to have been injured by your business or if you damage third party property whilst carrying out your work.

For example, a customer or delivery driver may slip or trip over on your premises which could lead to a claim being made against you. If you work from home and hold meetings there, then you would be advised to have Public Liability in place to cover any incidents that may occur in your home. A claim may also be made against you if you are working on a client's premises and they believe you have caused damage in some way. Even the slightest scratch could lead to some hefty legal bills.

Do I need Public Liability insurance?

If you have members of the public, delivery drivers or clients visiting your place of work then you may need Public Liability cover. If you work at a client's or third parties' premises then this cover is also advisable.

Public Liability insurance covers you for compensation costs and legal fees if a claim for personal injury or property damage is made against you, occurring either at your premises or as a result of work you've carried out elsewhere.

Do I need Public Liability insurance if I work from a client's office?

If you carry our work from a client's office or on their site then your Public Liability insurance gives you cover against compensation claims and legal costs if a claim is brought against you for damage to your client's property or their equipment.

It also covers you if someone claims to have been injured in some way by your business. For example, someone tripping or slipping while visiting your work premises, including if you work from home.

Is Public Liability insurance required by law?

No, it isn't compulsory under UK law, but it may be a specific requirement from some of your clients to have Public Liability insurance in place, especially if you work at their sites or offices.

Also bear in mind that some companies are obliged by their regulator or membership body to take out a certain level of business insurance.

How much Public Liability insurance do I need?

Our Public Liability cover provides a minimum level of £1 million. You may require more than that depending on the work you carry out or based on a client's specifications. With Tapoly you have the flexibility to increase and decrease the level you need depending on the contracts you have, so you never pay for more than you need.

How much does Public Liability insurance cost?

The cost (or "premium") for your Public Liability insurance will depend on several factors and is based on the predicted likelihood of a claim being made against you and the potential cost of a claim. It considers factors including the type of work you'll be carrying out, and the level of cover that you have requested.

Do I have to pay an excess or deductible?

There is a small excess payment required for our Public Liability insurance. However, you only have to pay this if a claim against you is successful, so you can call us to discuss any worries or concerns you have about anything related to a potential claim without worrying that we are going to charge you for it. We are here to help.

How long after the end of the policy can I make a claim?

Our Public Liability cover has no cut-off date for making claims, so as long as you have Public Liability insurance cover for the whole length of your contract, you will be covered for any incident that occurs during that time, regardless of how long afterwards it is brought to your attention.

What's not covered by Public Liability insurance?

Public Liability insurance protects you if a person or their property gets damaged while they are visiting you, or if you damage something belonging to them.

It does not cover you if you make a mistake during the course of your work that causes financial loss. This would be covered by Professional Indemnity.

It also does not cover accidents that happen to people who are working for you. If you employ staff then you should take out Employer's Liability insurance to cover this.

For more information on what's not covered, read our full list of exclusions below.
