Frequently Asked Questions

What isn't covered by my private healthcare plan?

As with most healthcare cover, there are some elements your plan won't cover. The exclusions will depend on the options you choose but here are some of the most significant exclusions:

  • Treatment of medical conditions your employees had, or had symptoms of, before they joined, unless you've chosen a "continued medical exclusions" or "medical history disregarded" policy.
  • Routine pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Treatment of long-term, on-going or recurrent conditions (chronic) like diabetes or asthma.
  • Cosmetic treatment.

Does having private healthcare mean I won't need to use the NHS?

No, private healthcare is designed to complement not replace the NHS. There are some conditions and situations which the NHS is best placed to deal with, emergencies being one example.

How do I make a claim?

If your GP says you need to see a specialist, tell them that you want to go private and ask them for an "open referral". With an open referral your GP won't give you the name of a specialist, just the type of specialist you need to see, such as a cardiologist. You can then use our Fast Track Appointment Service to find a specialist and book an appointment at the earliest convenience to suit you.

It's important that you call us on 0800 317 810 before you see a specialist or have treatment so that we can tell you what's covered and make sure you don't have any unexpected bills to pay.

How are my medical bills paid?

Bills are usually settled directly with the specialists. We will let you know if any aspect of your treatment isn't covered for any reason. We'll also let you know what excess you need to pay and how to pay it.

What should I do if I have already paid for my treatment?

If you have paid for treatment, provided it's covered by your private healthcare, we'll refund the cost, minus any excess. Just give us a call and send us the original receipts.

What should I do if I need further treatment?

If you need further treatment give us a call first to make sure it's covered.

What if my treatment isn't covered?

If the treatment you need isn't covered by your private healthcare, we'll explain this to you. We'll talk you through what options are open to you and how we can support you through your NHS treatment.

Where can I have my treatment?

If you have our Basic or Enhanced product your diagnostics or treatment will be undertaken at one of the hospitals or centres listed in AXA PPP Healthcare's Directory of Hospitals.

What in-patient treatment costs are covered by my private healthcare?

If you select the diagnostics only option it will only cover you for diagnostics to establish diagnosis.

If you choose an out-patient option it will include:

  • Accommodation
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Using the operating theatre
  • Nursing care
  • Drugs
  • Dressings
  • Radiotherapy and chemotherapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Surgical appliances that the specialist uses during surgery.

Refer to the Business Health Handbook for full details of cover.

What if I choose to have treatment on the NHS?

If you opt to be treated for free by the NHS for treatment that would have been covered by your private healthcare, you can claim for a cash payment.

What does the Dentist and Optician's option cover?

If you opt for Dentist and Optician cover, it includes:

  • Up to 80% of your dentist fees up to £400 per year
  • Up to 80% of the cost of prescribed glasses and contact lenses up to £200 per year
  • Up to £25 per year for an eye test.

Refer to the Dentist and Optician Handbook for full details of cover.

What does the Private GP option cover?

We will cover the cost of consultations with private GPs up to £500 per year.

Refer to the Private GP Handbook for full details of cover.

What therapies are covered?

If you take out the therapies option the Business Health plan covers 10 sessions per year of physiotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, osteopathy or chiropractic treatment. If you are referred for therapy by your specialist we will cover further sessions.

What mental health cover is provided?

If you take out the Mental Health option you are covered for face to face, email or phone counselling sessions through the Stronger Minds service.

As an in-patient or day patient you are also covered for psychiatric treatment, including specialist fees. As an out-patient, fees for psychologists and cognitive behavioural therapists are covered.

What does the Employee Assistance Programme cover?

Our Basic product doesn't include the Employee Assistance Programme benefits.

With Enhanced Cover you receive round the clock 24/7 phone support for psychological issues, together with help for legal, debt, family, consumer and housing concerns.

Refer to the Employee Assistance Programme Essential Handbook for full details of cover and how to get in touch.

Our Full product provides the same cover as Enhanced, but with some additional support too. You can access up to eight sessions of face to face counselling, plus an online live counselling service. There is also support for managers to help meet day-to-day team responsibilities.

Refer to the Employee Assistance Programme Premier Handbook for full details of cover and how to get in touch.

Do I have to have a medical before my private healthcare cover starts?

No. Products are offered on a moratorium underwriting basis, which means that you do not need to complete a medical declaration. However, cover is not provided for treatment of medical conditions you've had in the five years prior to taking out cover until:

  • You've been covered for two years in a row; and
  • You've been trouble-free from that condition for twelve consecutive months since your cover started.
